Washington Sundar (Tamil, born 5 October 1999) is an Indian cricketer who plays for the Indian national team. He is an all-rounder, meaning he can both bat and bowl. He bats left-handed and bowls right-arm off-spin. In domestic cricket, he plays for Tamil Nadu and represents Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League. Sundar was also a member of the Indian teams that won the 2023 Asia Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.

Washington Sundar was born on 5 October 1999 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, to a Tamil Hindu family. His sister, Shailaja Sundar, also known as M. S. Shailaja, plays cricket professionally. His father, Mani Sundar, loves cricket and was once very close to being selected for the Tamil Nadu state team. Washington was named after P. D. Washington, a retired army officer who financially supported Mani Sundar during his cricketing days.

Sundar started playing cricket at the young age of four or five. He studied at St. Bede’s Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School for his primary education. Later, he completed his bachelor’s degree from the Hindustan Institute of Technology and Science, Chennai.

Washington Sundar: Domestic Career

Sundar made his first-class cricket debut for Tamil Nadu in the 2016–17 Ranji Trophy on 6 October 2016. Like Ravichandran Ashwin, he started his career as a batsman and later became known as an impressive off-spin bowler. In October 2017, he scored his first first-class century for Tamil Nadu against Tripura in the 2017–18 Ranji Trophy. He was also part of the Indian Under-19 team for the 2016 Under-19 World Cup.

Washington Sundar: International Career

In November 2017, Sundar was selected in India’s Twenty20 International squad for the series against Sri Lanka. Earlier, he was also included in the One Day International (ODI) squad for the same tour due to Kedar Yadav’s injury. Sundar played his first ODI for India against Sri Lanka on 13 December 2017. In that match, he took his first international wicket by dismissing Lahiru Thirimanne. Later, he made his Twenty20 International debut against Sri Lanka on 24 December 2017. At the age of 18 years and 80 days, he became the youngest Indian player to play a Twenty20 International match.

In March 2018, Sundar was part of the Indian squad for the Nidahas Trophy against Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. He was praised by many for his economical bowling, conceding less than 6 runs per over in the Powerplay overs. In this tournament, he took his first three wickets in T20Is, becoming the youngest player to achieve this record. He won the Player of the Series award for his excellent performance. After this tournament, he became a regular member of the Indian T20 team.

Sundar initially went as a net bowler during India’s tour of Australia in 2020–21. Due to injuries to other players and strict COVID-19 regulations, India was unable to bring in new players quickly. This gave Sundar an unexpected opportunity to play his first Test match. He made his Test debut at The Gabba on 15 January. His first Test wicket was Steve Smith. In his first Test innings, he scored 62 runs and shared a vital 123-run partnership with Shardul Thakur. This partnership helped India avoid a large run deficit and played a vital role in India’s famous Test victory. With his maiden Test half-century, Sundar became the third Indian player to score a half-century on Test debut in Australia.

In October 2024, Sundar took his first ten wickets in a Test match against New Zealand. He scored his maiden Test century against England in the fourth match of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. He scored 53 runs in the second innings of the fifth Test match played in England in 2025 and helped India post a strong score of 396 runs on a bowler-friendly pitch.
