Phil Dean Salt (born 28 August 1996) is a Welsh professional cricketer. He plays international cricket for England and domestic cricket for Lancashire County Cricket Club. He previously played for Sussex. He is primarily a hard-hitting right-handed opening batsman. He occasionally keeps wickets and rarely bowls right-arm off-spin.
Salt made his international debut for England in July 2021. Although he was born in Wales, he grew up in Barbados before moving to England. He was a member of the England team that won the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2022. He set a record by scoring two consecutive centuries in T20 International matches against the West Indies.
In 2013, Salt played for Guildford Cricket Club, and joined the Sussex Academy for the 2014 season. He played for the Second XI and also played for the Sussex Cricket Board Development XI and Brighton & Hove in the 2014 Sussex Cricket League Premier Division. In the Sussex Premier League, he scored an unbeaten 200 off 129 balls against Horsham, an unbeaten 147 off 129 balls against Preston Nomads and a 33-ball 51 against Roffey, who later won the league title. In August 2014, he won the Player of the Month award.
Salt remained with Sussex for the 2015 season. In May 2015, he scored 72 off 52 balls in a Sussex Premier League match against Cuckfield Cricket Club. He also played for Brighton & Hove and was the team’s top scorer with 39 runs in a match against Middleton. In June 2015, he scored 43 runs for a Sussex Second XI against Surrey, which included players such as Mahela Jayawardene and Ashar Zaidi. Later in 2015, Salt made his List A debut for Sussex against Essex in the Royal London One-Day Cup. He opened the innings and scored 22 runs from 20 balls, but the match was abandoned due to rain.
Before the start of the 2016 season, Salt received a junior professional contract. On 20 May 2016, he made his Twenty20 debut for Sussex against Gloucestershire in the NatWest T20 Blast. On 8 July 2016, he played his first first-class match for Sussex during Pakistan’s tour of England.
On 10 September 2019, Salt signed with the Adelaide Strikers as an overseas player for the 2019–20 Big Bash League season.
Salt was unable to play at the start of the 2021 County Championship due to a leg injury sustained in a cycling accident. Later, he announced that he would be joining Lancashire CCC from Sussex for the 2022 season. In April 2022, Manchester Originals signed him for the 2022 The Hundred season. In December 2022, Delhi Capitals bought Salt for ₹2 crore in the IPL 2023 auction. Subsequently, when Jason Roy withdrew due to personal reasons, Kolkata Knight Riders signed him as Roy’s replacement for the 2024 IPL season. In the 2025 IPL Mega Auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore bought Salt for ₹11.50 crore. He was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders team that won IPL 2024, and he also played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore team that won IPL 2025.
In May 2019, Salt was included in England’s squad for the only Twenty20 International against Pakistan. He replaced the injured Dawid Malan, but did not play.
In July 2021, after training with the team in the early summer, Salt was selected in England’s ODI squad for the series against Pakistan. The main team withdrew from the series due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Salt made his ODI debut against Pakistan on 8 July 2021. In December 2021, he was included in England’s T20I squad for the tour of the West Indies. He played his first T20I match against the West Indies on 26 January 2022.
In June 2022, Salt scored his maiden ODI century and scored 122 runs in the first match against the Netherlands. In the same match, England scored 498 runs, the highest team score in ODI and List A cricket history. Dawid Malan and Jos Buttler also scored centuries.
On 13 November 2022, Salt won the T20 World Cup with England. He played two matches in the tournament, including the semi-final and the final. Salt was selected in both England’s ODI and T20I squads for the 2023–24 tour of the West Indies. He scored his first T20I century in the third T20I, becoming the fifth English male batsman to achieve the feat. He scored his second century in the fourth T20I. His 119 runs became the highest individual score by an English male batsman in T20I. He became the first English batsman to score two T20I centuries and the third male player in the world to score two consecutive T20I centuries. Salt was included in England’s squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup. He scored an unbeaten 87 off 47 balls against the West Indies. He scored 30 runs off an over from Romario Shepherd and his innings included seven fours and five sixes.

Salt completed his century in just 39 balls, surpassing Liam Livingstone’s unbeaten innings of 42 balls against Pakistan in 2021. He remained unbeaten on 141 runs from 60 balls. The score surpassed Danny Wyatt-Hodge’s 124 runs and became the highest individual score by an England player in T20 International cricket.
